---

The initiative ‘Ukrainian Research in Switzerland’ (URIS) invites applications for a URIS Fellowship for a six-month research and teaching stay at the University of Basel in either the spring semester (January–June 2026) or the autumn semester (July–December 2026).

The objectives of the initiative are to make a lasting contribution to advancing Ukrainian expertise in Switzerland, to foster the next generation of scholars, and to contribute to the international networks of Switzerland-based university research on Ukraine. URIS supports these objectives through the research and teaching activities of its fellows, as well as through regular events such as Ukrainian language courses, public lectures and events, academic events, and workshops.

Requirements (A detailed list of all documents to be submitted can be found on the CfA document below in the download section.)

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) – Application Process

1. What documents must be submitted with the application (in one single PDF file)?

Along with the completed application form (available for download above or [here in DE/EN]), you must submit the following documents:

  • Statement of purpose outlining your research focus and teaching experience
  • Curriculum vitae including a list of publications
  • Copies of university degree and PhD certificates
  • Proof of English or German language proficiency
  • Outline of your current research project (max. 3 pages)
  • Concept for a one-semester course (max. 2 pages)

2. Do I need to have completed my PhD before applying?

Yes, a completed PhD is a key eligibility requirement for this fellowship.

3. I use English for research and teaching and publish in English, but I do not have an official language certificate. Can I still apply?

Yes, an English language certificate is not required in this case. However, in individual cases, the URIS Scientific Advisory Board may reach out for further clarification.

4. Do I need to submit a hard copy of my application by 28 April 2025?

No, we only accept digital applications. Please submit your complete application in a single PDF file via email to uris@unibas.ch.

5. What exactly does "title and summary of research project" mean?

This refers to the project you plan to work on during your fellowship at the University of Basel. It may be an ongoing project or a new one. Previous URIS Fellows have worked on:

  • Book manuscripts
  • Individual book chapters
  • Smaller or larger research publications
  • Other Ukraine-related academic projects

Since URIS aims to strengthen Ukrainian expertise in Switzerland, your research project must be strongly connected to Ukraine or Ukrainian studies.

6. Can I apply if my research is only partially related to Ukraine?

Your research must have a clear and substantial connection to Ukraine. Interdisciplinary or comparative projects are welcome as long as Ukraine remains a central focus.

7. Can I apply without a current university affiliation?

Yes! And we strongly encourage you to apply.

8. Does URIS provide accommodation in Basel?

No, but URIS offers administrative support to help you find housing. Basel and especially the University has a variety of short-term rental options for visiting scholars.
